From amongst all the delectable hues, I narrowed it down to these choices (Watermelon Rose, Heathered Rust, Goldenrod, Concord Blue, Spring Green and Heathered Palm Leaf in order from top to bottom). Now, I'm pretty sure these guys are going to be scratchy little rotters, but I couldn't resist the rainbow of beautiful saturated colours.
While there, I also picked up a super cool teal and black plaid wool gabardine. This little beauty will become a nifty circle skirt.
So, enlighten me folks, has anyone else bought some of the Shetland wool? Is it a picky, pokey nightmare? Will I rue the day that I snatched up all this fabric yardage? Or will I marvel at my bargain hunting skills while I stroke my new soft and cosy acquisitions?

I bought five of the FM Shetlands last time they were on sale, and as far as wools go I would not call them scratchy. The weave is visible and a bit on the coarse side, but wool coats are expected to be lined anyway, and the colors are very nice in person. I also bought the Concord blue last time, with the concord/offwhite herringbone to match.
And I already placed an order for four more Shetland wools this morning.

Is Fabric Mart singing..."say my name, say my name..." in your ear at night? *smile* Cause you have purchased quite a bit from them lately! Not like I'm complaining because you are nice enough to leave some for the rest of us...though I only want 1 of these, ok maybe 2 of these shetland wools and will think on it before I hit the purchase button!!!

I bought some great grey for my next project which is an overcoat/jacket for my son. As the first commenter says, this is not exactly gabardine we're talking about here but I did not find it horrible. Besides (ditto), I'm looking for something that's going to wear like iron and that I'm going to interline and line anyway. Now, if I wanted to make a blazer or a suit jacket...mmmm, I'm not so sure unless i was also going to get leather/suede patches for the elbows and go the 'tweedy professor' route, but these would work well for that too. On the other hand, your real problem is choosing colors and IMHO, during the winter, anything bright and cheerful(other than white, yellow and pastels) is a definite candidate for a coat. No black coats. No black coats.
I also bought some; one is golden yellow and the other is red (not remember the fancy color names they used). I haven't used them yet, hopefully I get to make one coat before the weather warms up. I agree with TOBY and dfr2010 that the wool is not very scratch, but definitely not soft either. One thing is that I was expecting thicker fabric, but it turns out to be thinner. I think it has to be underlined to be a coat. I think it was a great deal anyway.
I didn't buy any of the shetland because I do suspect it's scratchy, but I did buy some of that green plaid! Haven't decided how to use it yet. The colors of shetland you posted are gorgeous!!

I ordered some of the cranberry shetland a few hours before it went on 50% off sale. I called Fabric Mart when I saw the reduced price, and they were nice enough to apply the discount. I'm making a cape for my daughter-in-law and I was concerned that the weight might not be heavy enough. Glad I ran into this thread! I'm planning to underline with cotton flannel anyway, so it sounds like I'm on safe ground.
