Uncaged

I AM FREE! Yesterday was my last day of work until September 2nd. Now I have weeks and weeks to sew and garden and lay around like a lump of goo. Wahoo!

I have already started going through my pattern and fabric stashes to figure out what is first up on the summer sewing frenzy list. Right now, a bunch of vintage patterns are calling my name, especially this cute little reversible wrap-around dress, Simplicity 8125. Please note that I scammed this image from the Vintage Sewing Patterns Wiki. If you are a vintage pattern lover, you have to check out this site - it is a treasure trove of vintage goodness!

I just have to find two lightweight wovens to pair together for this dress. The patterns calls for approximately 2.5 yards of 54" fabric for each side of the dress. Surprisingly, I don't have much in my stash that fits this criteria, so I may have to go fabric shopping. O-darn-it-all!

I love a wrap dress! It goes up and out when my waist goes out, then back again LOL!

With it being reversible you could have fun with this. You could even try some pattern mixing. A prime pattern on one side, then a mini pattern (in the same color scheme) on the inside.

First I'm jealous! 3 months of sewing time, sleeping late time, and doing whatever you want time!

Second, that's a great pattern. I know you will find two amazing prints to make it from for summer. But have you thought of using two lightweight wools for a great reversible fall piece? Add a turtleneck and some tights and it would be an awesome fall piece!

I know fall thoughts right? I'm sewing summer but thinking fall!

Oh I loe that pattern! I want to know how the back fastens - will you share as you make it? I can't wait to see what you do and I love Carolyn's idea of making it in wool for Fall/Winter. Lovely. g

gee, I guess you're really bummed that you have to go fabric shopping. Cute dress and I really like Carolyn's idea about a reversible wool dress for winter.

That's a great looking dress.

Sweet pattern. It would be an easy to wear dress with it's empire waist.

Very, very cute. Inquiring minds want to know how it works! Is the second fabric used on the back (I can't figure out how the shaping would work then), or does the wrap part detatch so you can turn the whole thing inside out?

It's great when you're free...I always have a problem with this thou cause I tend to make whatever the season is...my time off is Jan & Feb, and think in terms of winter clothes...does that happen to you, or do you think for the whole year?

Happy Sewing!!! (I'm secretly green - since I'm inundated right now!)

Thanks for posting this pattern! I have now bought it and 2 other 1960's Jiffy patterns. : ) Three years of reading sewing blogs and this is the first time I have bought a pattern because of one...

I thought you might like to see this recent try at that dress: http://chronicallyuncool.blogspot.com/2009/07/simplicity-8125-wearability-fail.html

I hope you have a more successful sew.
