Finally, Some Inspiration...

...or at least I hope so.

It will come as no surprise to those of you desperately hoping for some new sewing porn to grace the pages of HZC that my mojo has gone missing for quite a while.  When Simon died in July, it was as if all my desire to create beautiful garments vapourized into the ether.  I guess grief can do that - it wrings you out and leaves an empty husk.  Even with the introduction of joy back into our family through the adoption of dear sweet Hartley, I haven't felt the pull of my sewing room in months.  I have done a few things here and there - a couple pairs of pants and some skirts - but, the need to get involved in big projects has escaped me.

So, I have decided to try making a knit dress.  A simple knit dress.  A simple knit dress, that won't require much fitting and that I should be able to complete in a couple of days.  I'm hoping that this simple knit dress will be the impetus to get my arse back in gear.

I have settled upon Butterick 5523, a fab looking double knit dress, with a cool cowl collar (alliteration, anyone?) and an empire waistline.  This dress will be a nice addition to my cold weather professional wardrobe.

Now, I just need to rifle through the stash and see what I have in the way of double knit.  I know there is some chocolate brown in there that I scored from Fabric Mart a couple of years back. I guess I'll see what's what when I look.

I'm glad that your mojo is lifting its head and asserting some influence again. I've missed your projects and hope that you find success with this one!

I'm glad you're sewing too, but I understand the lack of mojo. My sewing projects have been sadly scarce this year too. Life gets in the way sometimes.

Cute pattern! That will look great with tights or leggings. It's one of those style that would be comfy to wear.

Glad to see you getting back into the sewing groove. I totally understand how grief saps your creativity. My husband's dad died this summer, and for a while it was very hard to muster up the interest or concentration required to sew. Autumn has been inspiring me, though! Simple projects like a quick skirt or easy top have been very satisfying to me lately.

I haven't sewn any clothes for a long time and that same pattern has been tempting me to get back into it. I can't wait to see what yours looks like.

Go for it, Shannon. The start of the school year stole my mojo, so now that I've survived the fist marking period, I'm finally able to juggle a little sewing at night. I'm a sucker for a cowl neck, so I'm eager to see your dress! Good luck!

Great choice!

Before I started the white shirt project I actually had this dress cut out in black ponte de roma. Just need to sew it together.
I think this dress will look great on you.

I agree, great choice! I made this last month in a navy ponte de roma to wear to my niece's wedding. It is an easy, fast sew. Do know this...the cowl neckline is LOW! I raised the bottom of the front neckline about 1 1/2 inches and still had to use a scarf inside the cowl for modesty!

I love this dress anyway. I got lots of compliments, I felt very comfortable and well put together.

Grief can affect us in ways we don't imagine. Whenever I loose my sewing mojo, I clean up the sewing room or play with the stitches on my machine. Just playing with my sewing stuff usually helps.

First thanks Shannon for commenting on my sunburst darts top. Then I have to say I'm glad you'll be sewing again!! I love that pattern and every time I see it I can't help thinking that the back would look great on a coat too.
About alterations, I'm going to be working on altering a cowl neck so it hangs right. There has to be a way.I'll let you know what Ii come up with,OK?

That is mojo isn't it? It comes when you don't expect it to and then it disappears. But there is something about sewing for me that when I start, it takes over. The pattern looks perfectly professional for colder weather. I can't wait to see made up by you.

Shannon, thought you may be in a lull and knew the reason why. Funny how grief can grip us in all aspects of our life. Sometimes you don't know who you are anymore. I feel it never really passes, but just subsides for the time being. Hope yours has gone beneath the surface now. Enjoy your new pup and sew something fabulous.
PS I thought of getting this pattern too for a nice comfy Christmas dress in the red shown on the pattern cover. knits are good for long periods of sitting and visiting.

I was just thinking how nice that you are back to the lacquer lundis, that you must be feeling a bit back into the groove... Don't flog yourself about sewing, you're usually exceptionally productive anyway so we don't worry about you showing up at school in pajamas. And if you couldn't take some time out when you have such a sad thing happen, life would be entirely too harsh.

I'm glad you are starting to get your mojo back. Perhaps you are hearing the distant siren's call of the Fairgate Fashion Desinger's Carry-All Kit! Take all the time you need.
