Home Sweet Home (Soon!)

Quite a while ago, I had mentioned that my husband & I own a 4 acre property.  We purchased it five years ago with the intention of building a house.  Well, life intervened and we didn't build immediately.  Translation: Hubby works for Chrysler Canada and although they did not go through bankruptcy like the American counterpart, we were still hesitant to commit to house building during strange economic times.  We are now at a point financially that even if he was to lose his job (which is an extremely remote possibility now), we would still be financially sound as new home owners.

So, we have picked a house plan (that's the exterior over on the left - I loves me some Craftsman styling!), found a builder and are now in the process of putting it all into action.  The builder says that we should be walking through the front door by August 1st next summer.

It's very exciting and very time-consuming.  Being the anal retentive, control freak that I am, I have been designing kitchen and bathroom cabinet layouts, as well as sourcing appliances, fixtures and home goods.  There are close to one million little things that need to be chosen and assessed for suitability.  Should the master bath have an infinity tub or a whirlpool?  Should we use vinyl siding or fibre cement board?  Can we afford to panel the library in cherry now or will it wait until later?  Etc, etc, etc...

Needless to say, I have been busy due to all the house design and planning.  Not to mention that I have a sweet pup with which to spend time and a job that is more necessary than ever if I really do want all those professional caliber appliances in the new kitchen.

I still have many garments to share with you all, but with time at a premium, I am finding it difficult to squeeze out the moments needed to photograph and blog.  So, please bear with me, I'll get it in gear soon.

Shannon, how wonderful for you and hubby! A new house is so exciting and daunting...oh the choices!!! Take your time and go with your gut instincts on what you like and want. And...never second guess yourself after it's done. The design is beautiful. For the kitchen, I'd take a look at Ina Garten's kitchen for House Beautiful. The made a model of it in Rockefeller Center last year when it won the kitchen of the year design. She's the Barefoot Contessa of The Food Network down here. Not sure if you get it up in CA. Layout is eveything.
Can't wait to see all the pictures as you progress along.

That's great news! Don't forget about designing the sewing room! I personally recommend: Dream Sewing Spaces by Lynette Ranney Black. I'm partial to this excellent book, since Lynette designed mine. (See p. 25)

How exciting! My husband and I purchased some land with plans to build sometime in the future. I've scoured through tons of plans and still haven't found the right one yet.

Best of luck with this adventure :)

How exciting! Congratulations. You'll have to keep us updated with pics as the building progresses.

I've been too busy to sew much and thus blog, too. Life happens! We'll still be here.

Your post just made my day. We've been planning our eventual build for years now (the Man is military, so we've got a few more years before we settle down in our chosen location), and hearing about yours starting to come to fruition is good vicarious living! Also, I love your blog. Thanks for posting. And the house looks beautiful; the idea of a cherry lined library gives me goosebumps!

Whhheeeeee! A new home! Very exciting! Congratulations!
We, of course, will want to live vicariously through anything you'd like to share; but the first rule of life is to live it! (You can write about it later...)
Have a blast!

Lucky you! My DH and I bought a piece of land in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada's last year. It is only a little over 1/2 acre, but it is on the river and was my Dad's property before he died. We haven't done anything with it yet, but are hoping to get some plans going soon. How exciting for you. I'll be looking forward to any postings you do on progress.

Congratulations on the new adventure! We went through this a few years ago. Glad it's over, but glad we did it also.

One hint - put in twice as many outlets as you think you need. Somehow they seem to end up behind furniture. OK - 2 hints. Whole house vacuum.
