The Regal Beagle

I have been meaning to post an update on Simon, but the last several days have been crazy.  It's that time of year.  Semester one ended and final exams were written and marked.  Grades were calculated and posted.  Second semester began today.  I have a whole new crop of teenagers to beat into submission.  Just kidding - some of them have already had their spirit broken.  :)

In my last Simon update, I mentioned that we had started him on Vetoryl (60 mg once a day).  He went in for ACTH stimulation testing on January 21st and after looking at the results (and noting that his drinking and urination had not diminished), the vet increased the dosage to 90 mg once a day.

After each dosage change, new ACTH stimulation testing must be done.  So, Simon went back into the vet on January 29th (at which time his drinking and peeing had decreased very slightly).  Now, the vet, in conjunction with a specialist in internal medicine, decided to alter his meds to 45 mg twice a day.   This new dosage started today.  I'm hoping that this twice a day routine will do the trick.

Aw, he's so cute. Glad the increased dosage seems to be having some effect and hopefully the split dosage will do the trick.

Let's hope this works.

Delurking to let you know I follow Simon's progress religiously, so glad when you post about him, he is such a sweetie. My darling pet, also a sweet eyed beagle was killed on Christmas day by an idiot kid(literally) on a skidoo who shouldn't have been allowed to even ride a tricycle. The parents never even offered an apology let alone any expression of sympathy for my lost.Lovely people!!
Here's hoping only the best for Simon on his new course of meds, please keep posting about him.
And finally I enjoy your sewing blog a lot, been lurking for a lonnng time.

I am so glad that Simon is showing some signs of improvement. It sounds like you are getting the best possible care for him. He looks so gorgeous in that photo, I'm sure that he will be much better soon.

Our beautiful Eskie was misdiagnosed with hypothyroidism, mostly due to an overly conservative vet who decided for us that it would be too expensive to test further. She had Cushings all along. After years of begging him to find out what was wrong, we finally demanded that the vet either test her or recommend someone who would. She's been treated for Cushings for 3 years, and she's now 18! It did take some tinkering with her medicine, but we finally saw the stability in the ACTH results the specialist was looking for. Interestingly, once she was treated for Cushings and the level of cortisol in her blood was regulated, she developed a lower spine sensitivity. The vet said the over production of cortisol masked the pain. She was treated with dermaol and tramadol. But she's doing well for an 18 year old dog. Once the Cushings was under control it was easier to manage the other symptoms. Good luck!

Yes, he is handsome. I hope the adjustment to meds help him to feel better soon.

Did you realise Simon is whiter now than the photo you have on your profile? Does this happen when they get older?
Anyway, I'm glad he is better and that the meds are doing something...

I'm so glad to hear that Simon is doing better! The big hurdle is finding out what's going on. After that, it gets easier (you'll note I didn't say "easy"). It's still interesting, finding doses and administering them, then keeping an eye on it all. Kudos to you for going through it! Some people don't. When my 6 year old dog got sick (with a minor, totally treatable sinus infection), my mother-in-law immediately said "Why don't you just put her down?"
Grrrrr....
(That's why I don't ask her for help with my sewing dramas, even though she's been sewing for at least 60 years. She also told me I was looking "fat" one year at Thanksgiving. And my husband says she LOVES me. I sure never want to see her "hate"...)
Anyway, congratulations again on Simon's better health and your love for him! You rock!
